| Chicagoans turned out in droves to Escape the Winter: Experience Australia. With temperatures in Chicago diving into the negative teens, January is a great time to escape to warmer places like Australia. That was the thinking behind a promotion held recently where Austrade Chicago partnered with the Trump International Hotel and Towers, Wine Australia, the Australian Consulate and the Victorian Government to host a week-long showcase of Australian consumer products in the Windy City. Celebrity Chef, Simon Bryant, travelled across from Adelaide for the week which included a restaurant promotion in the world renowned restaurant Sixteen and the first-ever Australian Market Day themed Escape Winter: Experience Australia. As part of the new USA Consumer strategy, the event showcased more than 30 wines provided by Wine Australia, beverages and over 30 uniquely Australian foods for sampling, along with aboriginal art, jewelry and live music. Up-and-coming Australian musicians, Anthony Snape and Claire Wyndham performed live throughout the afternoon to rave reviews. | ||
January 23, 2010 - 2010 Australia Day Ball |

The Australian Consulate-General hosted a formal event to celebrate Australia Day with members of the local Australian and American communities. It provided a valuable networking opportunity for local Australian and American businesses. The event was held at the Trump International Hotel and Tower with 250 guests in attendance. Mr. Frank Brunacci, Executive Chef at the Trump Hotel and Tower, designed a menu to highlight Australian produce and culinary expertise. He was joined by guest chef Simon Bryant, the Executive Chef at the Hilton Adelaide. Wine Australia generously donated table wines that complimented the menu and showcased Australian wine. In her remarks, the Consul General, Elizabeth Schick, stressed the importance of the bilateral trade relationship between the United States and Australia. Her remarks drew attention to the fact that there are currently over 9,000 Australian companies operating in the US market and that the United States remains Australia's largest economic relationship when taking into account two-way trade and investment flows. The level of continued corporate support for the event reflected the strength of the US and Australian economic relationship as well as the importance of this event as a premiere business networking occasion. Sponsors for the event were: Platinum – Caterpillar Incorporated, Macquarie Capital (USA), and Peabody Energy; Silver – ANCA and Invest Victoria; and Bronze – Baker and McKenzie, The Boeing Company, Creata, FCm Travel Solutions, and Futuris Automotive. As part of its 'Open Up: to Wines from Australia' campaign Wine Australia featured 30 wines showcasing the breadth and diversity of the Australian wine industry in terms of regionality and style. ANZACC Midwest Board Member, Judy Fitzgerald of OUR BIG SPLASH, managed the event creation and design which featured funky cabanas, umbrellas and colorful cube lounge and bar areas. As the longest running lakefront music event in the US, the Chicago Jazz Festival attracts over 150,000 visitors over three days and was the perfect venue for the promotion, aimed at changing consumers' perceptions about Australian wine. Native Australian wine makers, Phil Sexton of Innocent Bystander and Tom Carson of Yabby Lake, were on hand to expand guests' knowledge of the new world varietals Australia offers. In terms of sales, the show was a huge success with visitors to the Wine Australia Oasis consuming over 120 cases which is four times as much wine that was sold by a US vendor in 2008. In addition, a successful social media campaign was run in conjunction with the promotion with hundreds of consumers enrolling online to win a trip to for two to Australia.
